Principal's Message

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year at Bunnell High School! I hope you all had a safe, restful, and enjoyable summer. This opening newsletter provides you with important information, policies, and expectations that will guide our work at Bunnell and support your child’s success. Please take some time to review the entire newsletter and attached documents, and speak with your child in preparation for the start of the year on Thursday, August 29th. If your child is an incoming freshman, we encourage you to attend our 9th Grade Orientation on Friday, August 23rd.

At Bunnell, we pride ourselves in the traditions, shared values, diversity, and sense of community which serve as pillars of our school. As we open our doors this fall, please encourage your child to become more involved in extracurricular activities, clubs, the arts, and/or athletics. More information about what Bunnell has to offer can be found on our website https://www.stratfordk12.org/o/bhs. Our website is updated regularly and contains important news, updates, and general information pertaining to the overall operations of our school.

One way that you can support our vision is by becoming an active member of our school community. The Parent Advisory Committee, Bulldog Club, Post Prom, and the Band Parent Association are just a few simple ways that you can stay connected, thus enhancing your child’s high school experience. You will be hearing more about these organizations this fall.

This year, Bunnell High School will continue to prioritize a commitment to high standards of academic excellence, ensuring that all students have access to high quality, meaningful, and rigorous instruction, while creating conditions for students to reach their personal best. We will remain committed to supporting the diverse needs of students with equity, inclusivity, and social emotional learning as fundamental to a safe, caring, and welcoming school climate.

Last year, several of our programs and staff members received prestigious recognitions at the local, state, and national levels:

  • The Boys’ Basketball Team was crowned the CIAC Division III State Champions

  • The BHS Indoor Percussion clinched the SWC Championship

  • The BHS DECA club was recognized as a National Chapter Campaign Winner under the leadership of Mrs. Chelsea Maza, BHS Business Teacher

  • Ms. Kristen Record, BHS Physics Teacher, was appointed to the Connecticut State Board of Education

  • Bunnell’s Men of Color Student Leadership group was awarded the CAS CIAC 2024 Endowment & Flanagan Grant

  • Bunnell successfully completed the NEASC Collaborative Conference, a key step towards our accreditation process

As you can see, we have much to celebrate at Bunnell! These highlights acknowledge the outstanding work and commitment to professional excellence by members of our faculty, as well as the dedication and drive of our students. We look forward to expanding upon these accomplishments in the upcoming school year.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me via phone or email if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, October 1st for our Open House.

With Bulldog Pride,

Dr. Graf

Students and parents are invited to use the Bunnell High School Counseling Services at any time. Students are assigned a counselor who will follow them for four years. Counselors are available to assist in course selection, career development, planning for college or employment, and the social emotional needs of students. Numerous additional services are also available:

  • A variety of college catalogs, computer software and books related to college selection;

  • A comprehensive, Developmental School Counseling curriculum for all students;

  • Academic, career, and personal/social development services;

  • Bulletins, brochures, and related college and university materials;

  • Scheduled dates/times when representatives from colleges and industries are expected to visit BHS;

  • Scholarship and Financial Aid information;

  • Student Success Planning;

  • Career Interest Inventories; Learning Styles Assessment, and Career software programs;

  • Standardized testing services and test preparation information;

  • Information related to specialized counseling.

Students can make an appointment to see their counselor by coming to the Counseling Office before or after school or emailing the counselor directly.

As your students' course selections are tabulated and their schedules made over the summer, please remember that staffing of classes is determined by student enrollment. Schedule changes at the beginning of a school year are limited to obvious errors (for example, a 9th grader placed in English III; a wrong level assignment for a class; omission of a required class); changes in electives are not allowed. Students who wish to request an appointment with a counselor should stop by the Counseling Office and fill out an Appointment Request Form.

Scholarship Bulletin - Parents of students in grades 9-12 are encouraged to view the Monthly Scholarship Update highlighting several opportunities for BHS students to earn college financial support or pursue internship and career training.

Free & Reduced Lunch

Stratford Public Schools is pleased to announce our participation in the State of Connecticut’s State Transition Assistance for Breakfast and Lunch (STABLE) program.  Please click here to read the letter from Mrs. Pamela Mangini.

All lunch applications from the 2023-2024 school year are in effect until Friday, October 11, 2024. If a new application is not filled out prior to October 11, 2024, your child's lunch status will automatically be reset to full pay.

The school lunch online payment system of the Stratford Schools is myschoolbucks.com. Parents may use this system to make payments online and/or to check student balances.  If you experience any problems with this or have other questions, you may contact Myschoolbucks toll free at 1-855-832-5226. Of course, students may make cash or check deposits directly into their accounts at any time.  Cash/check deposits must be placed in an envelope accompanied by the student’s name and ID number (to keep your child’s ID number confidential, do not write the student’s name on the outside of the envelope).  If there is more than one student in a family in any Stratford school, one student may enter the deposit to their siblings account as long as each student’s ID number is indicated as well as the amounts to deposit to each account. Cash/check deposits should be given directly to the cafeteria supervisor. Other information regarding the automated “Point of Service” in the BHS cafe may be found on the district website by clicking here. All parents are strongly encouraged to fill out the online Free and Reduced Lunch Application. Paper versions are available in the main office.

Bus Transportation

Information regarding bus routes will be published on the District Website and in the Stratford Star. Please click here to access all the bus routes. All students should be at their assigned bus stop 10 minutes prior to the anticipated pick-up time. Students who live over 2 miles from their school are eligible for bus transportation. Students who live within 2 miles from school are not eligible for a bus. Students must ride their assigned bus to/from school. Assigned buses and stops will be provided on the student's schedule. Bus transportation to and from school is a privilege; as outlined in the student handbook, the school bus is an extension of the school and it is expected that students demonstrate proper behavior on the bus at all times. All school rules and BoE policies apply while on the school bus. Please click here to read the Stratford Public Schools' Transportation Policy. Bus passes will be distributed by mid-October and must be shown to ride the bus.

Campus Parking

Students are reminded that, due to space limitations, grade 12 students will be given priority to park on school grounds during the 2024-2025 school year. Grade 11 students will only be alllowed to park on school grounds after seniors have been given the opportunity to register their cars and it is determined that parking spaces are still available. Please click here for the BHS Parking Application link. Students must upload a copy of their driver's licence - permits are not eligible to "hold" a space. Once the form is filled out, payment for your parking pass is required. Parking passes will be available for purchase prior to the school year starting on the following dates in the main lobby:

Each car must have a sticker and be registered with the main office to park on school grounds; unregistered cars may be ticketed or towed. Please see Mrs. Sabia in the main office for further information.
