In Science, Ms. Kling’s Environmental Biology students are off to a strong start this semester, constructing complex food webs through careful data analysis. Working in collaborative groups, they're examining different aspects of ecosystems and identifying various human impacts on these delicate systems. Meanwhile, students in Ms. Kling’s Anatomy classes are wrapping up their skeletal system unit after mastering over three-quarters of the bones in the human body. They're now diving into the muscular system and gearing up for exciting dissections coming this spring!
In Math, Mr. Bloomquist’s classes have embraced the EFFL philosophy—"Experience First, Formalize Later" approach. Instead of starting with formulas and definitions, students dive into rich, collaborative tasks that challenge them to wrestle with ideas and build their own understanding. Whether they’re using activities from IM and MathMedic or engaging in BTC-style learning, the goal remains the same: create a community built on curiosity, confidence, and connection. Students explore problems together, make mistakes as part of the learning process, and yes—share some laughter along the way. By giving students space to think, talk, and make sense of math for themselves before formalizing concepts, we're helping them develop understanding that truly sticks. This approach recognizes that meaningful learning happens when students feel both challenged and supported, with the classroom serving as a collaborative space where discovery comes first and definitions follow.

In Sports Literature, students are currently working through The Pony Excess, focusing on how power and pressure influence decision-making in sports programs. We began the unit with a class activity that asked students to map out who actually holds power in sports systems versus who takes on the most pressure and risk, using questions about playing time, injury decisions, community expectations, and who benefits when teams win. That discussion helped students notice a clear imbalance between decision-makers and those who bear the consequences, which naturally led to conversations about ethics in sports culture. Students are now applying this same lens to The Pony Excess, using specific moments from the documentary to analyze winning versus well-being, community influence, and accountability. This work will later extend into a comparison with Friday Night Lights to deepen students’ understanding of how these dynamics appear across different texts.
